FAQ

1.  When are HIV and STD counseling available?

Tests for HIV, Chlamydia, and Gonorrhea are done on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00-4:00; this is available to those not currently experiencing symptoms.
If you are experiencing symptoms, would like additional testing, or need to meet with a health care provider; you may make an appointment by calling (801)581-6431.  Appointments are available M-F 8:00am-5:00pm.

2. What is the cost for HIV and STD screenings?

HIV testing is free the first Tuesday of every month, and $15 each Tuesday and Thursday after.
Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Combined Screening is $35.  This includes lab work and meeting with health counselor for questions or concerns.

3. Who is eligible to come in for STD and HIV counseling?

Anyone can come in for HIV testing on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2:00-4:00.  You do not need to be a student to participate in the HIV screening.
Only currently enrolled University of Utah students are eligible to receive Chlamydia and Gonorrhea testing and to meet with health care providers.

4. What if I have a positive result?

Trained counselors are on hand to answer questions and make recommendations for treatment of HIV. 
In the event of a positive test for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea the counselors can make arrangements for you to receive free or low cost medication to treat the infection.  They can also help make arrangements for you to meet with a health care provider if needed.

5. What kind of test does the Student Health Center use?

HIV Testing uses an oral swab which gives results within 20 minutes. STD Testing for students uses a urine based test which is sent out to a lab for results within 2-3 days.
