HIV / STD Counseling

SHAC members are certified by the Utah Department of Health to offer HIV / STD confidential counseling and screenings to students. Trained SHAC peer counselors provide students with education, prevention, and risk reduction information during screenings. SHAC hopes to reduce risky behavior habits while increasing awareness of HIV / STDs on campus.

HIV ANTIBODY TESTING

Our clinic currently offers the OraQuick ADVANCE® Rapid HIV test.  This is a painless oral swab and the results are ready in 20 minutes. This test is available to anyone in the community at the cost of $15. We offer free HIV testing the first Tuesday and third Thursday of every month.

Important Info
• Patient identification is kept confidential, filed by a numerical system instead of name. HIV Files are kept separate from Student Health Center files to ensure confidentiality.
• Be aware that the average time for the detectable antibodies of HIV to develop is six to twelve weeks from the date of exposure. Before this time period, there is not sufficient antibody development to be tested.

STD TESTING

Our clinic currently offers a urine based STD (sexually transmitted disease) test for chlamydia and gonorrhea. The patient provides a urine sample which is sent out for testing with results available in 1-2 weeks. Free medication is available to students with positive results and their partners. This test is only open to current University of Utah students and the cost is $35.

Important Info
• Our clinic tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea because they are the #1 and #2 STD's diagnosed on this campus and are likely to show NO symptoms.
• Other STD testing is available via appointment through the Student Health Center.
